Sunday evening, May 2, 1971 and the second Amtrak train #18, the e/b Super Chief, is preparing for departure from LAUPT. There are seven F’s up front, lead by 304C, 300L and 302L, to get the train over the road.
D&RGW Alco PA1 6001
D&RGW PA1 6001 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was Train # 1, The Royal Gorge, which departed Denver at 9:00 AM, Mountain Standard Time, and arrived in Colorado Springs at 10:40 AM. Ten minutes was allowed for the station stop during which the CB&Q’s Denver Zephyr cars ( behind the first dome car ) were cut off the train. Note the blue flag ( metal sign ) hanging in the Engineer’s window. After the DZ cars were uncoupled, # 1 continued on to Pueblo and then terminated at Salida at 3:15 PM. The DZ cars were moved to the other side of town by Rio Grande D&RGW PA1 6001 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler.
Illinois Central 382, “Ten Wheeler,” pulling a passenger train. This locomotive had John Luther “Casey” Jones at the throttle on the night of April 30, 1900, when Casey ran into the caboose of a stopped freight train in Vaughn, Mississippi. Although Casey was killed in the wreck, and memorialized in song, locomotive 382 was repaired and served the IC for many more years.

While not a technically very good photo, it is quite interesting. Evan Werkema explained on Train Orders:
Eastbound and westbound Desert Wind meeting at Lugo, CA on the east side of Cajon Pass during the brief period when that train operated with F40PH/SDP40F pairs. These particular SDP’s had been re-cabled with heavier HEP pass-through cables so they could pass the juice from the F40 through to the Amfleets and Superliners.

Amtrak Train No. 307, the State House heads for St. Louis, while the equipment for Train No. 30, the Capitol Limited takes head room on the main prior to backing into Union Station. The Conrail westbound freight waits patiently on the hill in May 1989.
